2001 Trouble in Shangri-La Tour

Stevie Nicks supported the release of her sixth album Trouble in Shangri-La with a national tour. Sheryl Crow, who produced half the album, joined Stevie onstage at some shows on the tour. The tour strangely lived up to the album’s title as two separate events significantly disrupted the course of the tour.

By August, Stevie was experiencing trouble with her voice. The problem became readily apparent at her Santa Barbara, California concert, where she temporarily stopped the show to reassess the condition of her voice. After several minutes, she carried on with the show, but apologized profusely to the audience for her hoarseness. On August 18, citing respiratory illness, Stevie ended up postponing or canceling the remaining August shows to allow her voice to recover.

In September, Stevie resumed the tour with a stronger voice, but something far worse was about to happen. On September 11, Stevie was still in Toronto after performing a concert at the Molson Amphitheatre a night earlier. When terrorists attacked several American landmarks, Stevie was in the process of traveling to New York, where she was scheduled to perform two concerts, which were ultimately canceled. Despite the attacks, Stevie’s parents encouraged her to continue with the tour so that she could help people heal through the power of her music. Following their advice, Stevie continued with the tour.

Stevie reflected on her experience in the song “Illume (9-11),” which she recorded for Fleetwood Mac’s 2003 album Say You Will.
